This varied, diverse programme displays in excellent manner the many faceted talents of a splendid band and outstanding soloists led by an inspired, gifted conductor. The contrasting yet complementary nature of the music chosen may be divided into two broad categories: reflective pieces marked by lyric song and sacred hymn; and iconic, secular sound images from modern media and culture. The arrangers and composers embrace a wide range of styles, the programme beginning with one of the world's most famous band writers, the late Alfred Reed (1921-2005), and ending with an exciting, stirring work by a 17-year-old New Zealander, Todd Smith.
