CD Out of this World - Cory Band

This recording follows a recognised trail of substantial recordings by Cory Band and Musical Director Robert Childs including Triumphant Brass, Actaeon, The Promised Land, Gaia Symphony and the Brass Band Classics series.

This disc takes its inspiration from ethereal beauty and heavenly intervention. Paul Lovatt-Cooper's Breath of Souls parallels itself to Mother Nature's ability to triumph over adversity while Spiriticonjures up the notion of great composers of the past looking down from heaven as today's composers refine their craft. The title also alludes to the standard of music-making by this fine band, winning all there is to be won and remaining at the top of the world rankings for five years. The disc also features euphonium soloist David Childs in UFO Concerto (nothing to do with unusual apparent anomalies in the sky) and Helvetia, the Roman name given to Switzerland and written in memory of James Watson. All the tracks on the disc are world premiere studio recordings and, as the title suggests, the playing is simply...out of this world!

CD Soloist Showcase - Black Dyke Band

If there was a worldwide brass band Hall of Fame, there would be a great array of former principal players of the Black Dyke Band amongst its membership, great names of the past who have attained legendary status. Today, the band's 'hot seats' retain the same magical appeal and are much sought after. This fact is made manifest on the band's Soloist Showcase disc, featuring all the principal players displaying their superlative talents with musicality, rich tone and wondrous technique. Each section of the band is also showcased along with some of the younger players, all of which adds a splendid variety to the programme. The tracks progress, with slight variation, in a concert seating formation starting with cornets and ending with percussion.

CD Omnium Gatherum - Brass Band of Central Florida

In preparation for its tour of the United Kingdom in 2011, Brass Band of Central Florida (BBCF) endeavoured to design a series of concerts that would surprise, delight and challenge its audiences while still paying homage to the great British brass band tradition. In so doing, BBCF brought its considerable talents to bear on the widest array of musical styles and genres possible. The result is this recording and its unique title. Indeed, the title also represents what a brass band is at its most basic level. More than any other musical ensemble, a brass band is a unique musical organisation, possessing a miscellaneous collection of people who bring a world of experience and talent to the group from every direction fathomable. What a wonderful foundation from which to make musical art! It is hoped this recording serves to show all the sides and colours this ensemble is capable of while being a truly enjoyable listening experience. No matter what your musical preference, there is something here for everyone.

CD Soprano Legends - Kevin Crockford, Peter Roberts, Alan Wycherley

"It is indeed a privilege and a pleasure to introduce this unique compilation CD recording featuring tracks that date back over 30 years! Here we have three extremely gifted musicians, whom I have known personally throughout my banding career. All three bring to each performance a unique inimitable personality and charisma; believe me, all three are quite colourful characters!

I can recall countless contest performances of sheer magic that each, with their own respective bands, have delivered over the years and I can only marvel at their nerves of steel, year on year! That said, it is perhaps also the consistency of concert performances, week in week out, that places these three exponents of the soprano cornet in a league of their own. The personal pleasure it has given me to conduct Kevin, Peter and Alan on the concert stage is immeasurable. One hundred per cent commitment for every performance is undoubtedly the very reason for their lasting success.

Three quite different styles of playing, but nonetheless each one earning, without question, the right to be described as a 'legend'! This recording is so unique that it is an absolute must for any brass player or any brass band enthusiast to own.

Enjoy!"

The Melody Shop (Karl King arr. Jacob Larsen)

Written in 1910, this circus march is one of Karl King's most popular marches. King had an illustrious career as a player, a bandmaster and most notably as a composer. Much of his composition was undertaken while he was working within the circus environment and it is often said that King did for the circus march what John Philip Sousa did for the patriotic march. This approachable arrangement is a worthwhile addition to any band library.

Holcombe Hill (Dan Price)

A traditional concert march in league with the great marches composed by William Rimmer, Kenneth J Alford and George Allen. The name is taken from an area in Lancashire just north of Bury, Greater Manchester, not far from the composer's home.

Prelude and Fanfare (Dan Price)

Prelude and Fanfare takes its inspiration from a piece of NASA video footage, where a camera is attached to a piece of debris and jettisoned into space from the space shuttle. Initially, the camera captures images of the shuttle flying off into the distance and out of sight and images of Earth from outer space as the debris floats around. The Earth's magnetic field takes hold of the debris and it re-enters the atmosphere, gathering speed and plummeting towards the Earth.

The work is a musical reflection of this journey, starting with a 'weightless'lontano section. A musical representation of the entry into the earth's atmosphere, and the brisk tempo and rhythm of the main theme convey images of accelerated speed and excitement which eventually climaxes in the inevitable final 'thud' of both the musical and documented journey.

This musical study explores the use of minimalist techniques and ideas within the confines of the brass band idiom. The overall structure of the piece is based on the shape of a crescendo, starting at the softest level the ensemble is capable of and finishing at the greatest. Within this structure, smaller crescendo sections determine the different segments of the overall work.

Divertimento for Euphonium (Dan Price)

Commissioned by Lynsey Orr, a student at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Divertimento for Euphonium (or Baritone) with piano accompaniment is written in four distinct and individual movements, each tailored to display a different characteristic of the instrument;

I. Intrada - traditional in style but with a pompous melody line which conjures up images of the English countryside. II. Siciliana - a slow melancholic movement, full of emotion and hints of an Irish air.
III. Habanara - a rousing passionate movement written with technicality in mind.
IV. Rondo - a combination of jazz and traditional melodic influences, requiring dexterity from the soloist.

General Series Band Journal, April 2012

No. 2108 March - Shoeburyness (Eiliv Herikstad).
This march is dedicated to Clarence Adoo and the people of Shoeburyness Corps where he grew up. Two main tunes are featured, 'Yellow star, and red and blue' and 'Grace, fathomless as the sea', the latter being a favourite of the corps over many years.

No. 2109 Soli Deo Gloria (William Himes).
Soli Deo Gloria (Glory to God alone) was used by J S Bach and G F Handel to give God credit for their work. Indeed, J S Bach wrote the initials 'S D G' at the beginning and end of all his church compositions and also to some of his secular works. Two themes are featured in this setting; familiar phrases from J S Bach's chorale prelude, 'Jesu, joy of man's desiring' are joined with Naida Hearn's praise chorus, 'Jesus, name above all names' in a spirit of adoration.

No. 2110 Cornet and Euphonium Duet - You are always there (Martin Cordner).
This song was originally wriiten for an American, Christian-based, children's television show called 'Colby's Clubhouse' but found its way into the vocal repertoire of The Salvation Army.

No. 2111 Fill the world with glory! (Kevin Larsson).
A setting of the tune, 'God's Soldier' in a style that is synonymous with the razzmatazz music of early Hollywood.
