This rather melancholy work for cornet and brass band will showcase the lyricism of any fine cornetist. The composer writes, 'the sole aim of the soloist should be simply to sing'.

Euphonium Solo - Images of Praise (Kenneth Downie)

This solo was written for Derick Kane and consists of two sections. The first is built on an original, lyrical melody which is introduced immediately by the soloist while the second is more virtuosic in style and features a tune by the late Keith Prynn, 'I feel like singing all the time'. The solo is jaunty and light-hearted, with a fine sense of style, and not without a dash of humour.

Christus Victor (Kenneth Downie)

This is a festive selection of music to celebrate the supreme victory of Jesus Christ. The predominant theme of 'Crown Him!' comes from the Thomas Kelly hymn 'Look, ye saints! The sight is glorious' which are associated with Henry Smart's tune 'Regent Square'. Also featured are Andre Crouch's song 'Soon and very soon' as well as Dave Bilborough's 'All hail the lamb'. In the final pages of the score, all three tunes come together in a statement of affirmation.

Brother James\' Air (James Leith Macbeth Bain arr. Kenneth Downie)

The 'brother James' who wrote this beautiful tune was James Leith Macbeth Bain. He was born in Scotland in 1840 and died in Liverpool in 1925. Besides being a musician, he was a poet, mystic and had a great interest in healing. He published a book called 'The brotherhood of healing' in 1906 and spent the latter years of his life working with the underprivileged in Liverpool.

He wrote this simple but charming tune to accompany the familiar paraphrase of Psalm 23 which comes from the Scottish Psalter of 1650; 'The Lord's my shepherd, I'll not want'.

CD Romeo and Juliet for Brass Band - Eikanger-Bjorsvik Musikklag

The idea of arranging movements from Prokofiev's popular ballet Romeo and Juliet for brass band and percussion is not as strange as it may first seem, since Russia boasts a great brass tradition. The three arrangers who participated in this unique project have had a close relationship with Eikanger-Bjørsvik Musikklag for many years, resulting in colourful and thrilling arrangements that showcase the full range of sonorities available, particularly involving melodic percussion instruments and the expressive contrasts achievable between muted and full-voiced brass.
